Omega 3 Fish Oil Dosage Guide for Children and Adults

Children and Infants

The recommended dosage for children over 5 years old is 1000-1200mg of quality fish oil which should provide at least 500mg of EPA fatty acids and 150-350mg DHA fatty acids.

For infants under five, try a lower dosage first to make sure there are no adverse reactions such as feeling sick or diarrhea.

Adults

For adults, the recommended dosage of fish oil is the same as for children over 5. Although you can increase that up to about 3000mg of fish oil if you don’t have any problems with it.

Side Effects

There are very few side effects from taking fish oils at these dosages, after all it is not a drug - omega 3 fatty acids are found in normal food and in breast milk. Some people may experience nausea or feeling sick at first. This normally passes if you carry on taking fish oil, but it is a good idea to reduce the dosage until it doesn’t make you feel sick and then gradually increase the dosage.

Taking High Dosages

Many people claim great benefit from taking very high dosages even up to 10,000mg of fish oil a day especially for serious disorders such as chronic depression.

Always consult a doctor before taking more than the recommended dosages. Taking these levels of fish oil could cause blood thinning and raise levels of blood sugar.
